1) Do not come without the goodies. (Не приходите без гостинцев)
When upstairs are waiting for guests, they cook a lot, buy the best sweets, so it will be rude if visitor comes without some present. It can be a small and not expensive thing, though! Russians walk a lot in the dusty streets, instead of enter the house directly from the car. For these reasons, and also because the tradition rooted for many centuries, Russians take off their outdoor shoes when they enter into a private house or apartment. 1) Never show up empty-handed.
If you’re invited to someone’s home, it’s considered impolite to arrive without a small gift. Russian hosts often go out of their way to prepare for guests — cooking generous meals and buying special treats. Bringing a token of appreciation, such as a box of chocolates, a dessert, or flowers, is not only thoughtful but expected. The gift doesn’t have to be expensive — it’s the gesture that matters.

2) Take off your shoes at the door.
When entering a Russian home, always remove your outdoor shoes. This custom is deeply rooted in both practicality and tradition. Since people often walk through dusty streets and not directly from a car to a doorway, keeping outdoor shoes on indoors is seen as unhygienic and disrespectful. Most households will provide slippers, or “tapochki,” for guests to wear inside.

3) Always give up your seat to the elderly in public transport.
In Russia, respecting older people is taken seriously, especially in public places. If you’re on a bus, tram, or metro and see an elderly person, someone with a disability, or a pregnant woman standing, you’re expected to offer your seat. Failing to do so may earn you disapproving looks or even comments from other passengers. It’s not just good manners — it’s a social expectation.

These customs may seem unfamiliar at first, but following them will show that you respect Russian traditions and are making an effort to adapt to local etiquette. This can go a long way in making a good impression and having a more enjoyable visit.
