A Change of Plans — A Short Dialogue-Based Narrative

Yesterday was full of surprises. I met up with Alex after school, and I couldn’t help but ask, “Didn’t you mention you were going to have a cup of coffee?” He looked confused for a moment before replying, “Oh, that was the plan, but I ended up getting a smoothie instead.”

We waited outside the school gates for a while. “I thought you told me your mum would be able to pick us up after school,” I said, checking my watch. Alex scratched his head. “Yeah, that was the idea. But she got stuck at work and texted me just now.”

As we walked home, I glanced at the window of Alex’s house and asked, “Weren’t you the one who said Lisa was watching TV?” He shrugged. “She was earlier, but she probably switched to playing video games now.”

Trying to salvage the day, I asked, “I’m pretty sure you mentioned you were planning to catch a movie later. Still going?” Alex shook his head. “I did say that, but I forgot I have a family dinner tonight.”

That reminded me—“Didn’t you say that Tom had already bought a motorbike?” I asked. “Yeah,” Alex nodded. “He got it last weekend. It’s a beast—bright red and super loud.”

We stopped at the corner, and I remembered something else. “I thought you said he was meeting me at nine o’clock.” Alex pulled out his phone. “He was. Let me call him—maybe he’s running late.”

As we finally parted ways, I laughed. “Wasn’t it you who said you’d be cooking beef for dinner tonight?” Alex grinned. “I did, but with all these changes, looks like it’s going to be pizza instead!”
