Задача

Если бы у нас не было современных средств связи, какие из способов, представленных в тексте бы вы выбрали для общения? Почему? Обсудите.

Краткий ответ:

A: If I had lived in ancient times, I would have chosen pigeons as my main way of staying in touch. In my opinion, it’s one of the quickest, simplest, and most cost-effective ways to communicate. Plus, I think it would be amazing to have a bird trained to carry messages for me and even bring replies from others.

B: Personally, I’d rather use whistling to communicate. First of all, I’m not a fan of pigeons. Secondly, I truly believe that passing messages this way could be faster compared to other traditional methods.

A: I guess that wouldn’t work for me—I’ve never learned how to whistle. But what are your thoughts on using smoke signals to send messages?

B: Ah, I get that. Honestly, I think smoke signals work well over long distances. But they come with serious risks, especially if you’re in a dry or windy area.

Подробный ответ:

If I had lived in ancient times, I would probably have chosen pigeons as my main method of communication. In my opinion, this was one of the most practical and efficient ways to send messages over long distances. It was not only fast, but also easy to manage once the bird was trained. Besides, using pigeons didn’t cost much compared to hiring messengers or building signal fires. I also think it would be really exciting to have your own bird that could carry letters to other people and bring back their replies. It’s like having your own living mail service.

Of course, not everyone would agree with me. For example, some people might prefer other methods. One of my friends says that he would rather use whistling to communicate. He mentioned that he doesn’t like pigeons at all and believes that whistling might even be faster in some situations, especially across short distances or in mountainous areas where sound can travel far. I can understand his point of view, but for me, that option wouldn’t work—mainly because I don’t know how to whistle at all! So even if it’s fast, it’s useless to me personally.

Then there’s the method of smoke signals. I find this idea very interesting. It was a creative way to send messages across large open spaces before writing was widespread. It worked well, especially in areas with good visibility like deserts or mountains. However, it also had serious disadvantages. Smoke signals could easily be misunderstood if the code wasn’t clear. And more importantly, this method was quite dangerous—it involved fire, which could spread and cause damage, especially in dry environments.

In conclusion, every ancient communication method had its pros and cons. While whistling might be simple and fast for some, and smoke signals effective over long distances, I would still prefer pigeons. They were reliable, efficient, and even a little bit magical. It’s amazing to think that long before email or texting, people used birds to stay connected. It shows how resourceful and clever people have always been when it comes to solving problems—especially the problem of staying in touch.
