Whenever people come back from a vacation, you might expect them to be full of joy, talking about the beautiful places they visited and the fun they had. But surprisingly often, that’s not the case. Personally, I’ve come to expect something very different — stories full of problems, complaints, and unexpected disasters. In fact, I’ve noticed that for many people, talking about what went wrong during their holiday has become a tradition of its own.
Some people complain about the weather — they were hoping for sunshine but ended up stuck indoors because of heavy rain or cold winds. Others share stories about missed flights, lost passports, or luggage that somehow ended up in a different country. Accommodation issues are also a common topic: the hotel looked nothing like the photos online, the room was dirty, or the food was terrible.
Then there are the classic stories of misunderstandings in foreign countries — people ordering the wrong food at restaurants, getting lost in unfamiliar streets, or struggling with a language barrier. Some of these stories are stressful in the moment, but become funny memories later.
Over time, I’ve realized that while these experiences are frustrating, they also make vacations more memorable. People love to tell these stories not just to complain, but to laugh about them later and share something real. So now, whenever someone returns from a trip, I don’t just ask, “How was it?” — I ask, “Okay, what went wrong?” Because I know there’s almost always something.
