Every year, thousands of people flock to beaches to relax and enjoy the sea — but many of them leave something harmful behind: litter. Items like food wrappers, cigarette butts, empty drink cans, broken toys, and plastic bags are often left scattered on the sand. But marine litter doesn’t just come from tourists — it also enters the ocean from ships, fishing vessels, storm drains, and industrial waste.

Marine animals are greatly affected by this pollution. Sea mammals such as seals and sea lions can become trapped in discarded fishing nets, ropes, or plastic packaging. This can cause serious injuries or prevent them from escaping predators. In addition, many birds, fish, and sea turtles mistake litter for food. Once eaten, this debris fills up their stomachs, making them feel full while providing no nutrition. As a result, they slowly starve to death.

People are at risk too. Sharp objects like glass shards or pieces of metal hidden in the sand can cause cuts or other injuries. These risks are especially dangerous for young children playing barefoot on the beach.

What Is Marine Litter and Where Does It Come From?
Marine litter is the trash and waste that ends up in the sea or along coastlines. It includes common items like plastic wrappers, bottles, drink cans, cigarette butts, straws, toys, and even shoes or broken equipment. Most of this rubbish comes from people visiting the beach, but it can also be carried by the wind, washed down drains, or dumped from ships, fishing boats, and factories. Once in the water, this litter can travel for hundreds of kilometers, harming wildlife and polluting even the most remote parts of the ocean.

Marine litter is extremely harmful to animals. Sea turtles may swallow plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish. Birds pick up shiny plastic pieces and feed them to their chicks. Seals and dolphins can get caught in abandoned fishing nets, ropes, or rings, causing injuries or drowning. When animals eat plastic, it fills their stomachs without giving them any real food. This can cause starvation and death, especially in young or endangered animals.
